About Loch Ness

Loch Ness is a large freshwater Loch extending for approximately 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of Inverness. It takes its name from the River Ness, which flows from the northern end. Loch Ness is best known for claimed sightings of a Mythical creature “The Loch Ness Monster” affectionately called “Nessie”.

It has a depth of 788 feet (240 meters) and a length of about 23 miles (36 km).

Loch Ness has the largest volume of fresh water in Great Britain.

It was formed approximately 10,000 years ago when the last Ice Age was about to end.

Loch Ness is the supposed home of the legendary Loch Ness monster, also known as “Nessie”.

The loch contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined.

The River Oich to the south connects Loch Ness to Loch Oich.

At its deepest point, the lake goes down to a depth of 230 meters.

Loch Ness is one of a series of interconnected, murky bodies of water in Scotland; its water visibility is exceptionally low due to the high peat content of the surrounding soil.

Loch Ness never freezes and stays at a constant temperature of 5 degrees all year round.

The first-ever photograph of Nessie was taken in 1933 by Hugh Gray. Nessie is the most famous lake monster in the world and has appeared in many books, films and TV shows.
